Support GMO Labeling Bill HB 7082

I was overjoyed to learn HB 7082 -- a bill that would require the labeling of genetic engineering foods -- has been introduced.  As your constituent, I urge you to vote YES on this bill!

When it comes to my family's health and well-being, nothing is more important than protecting them from potential danger. Science has shown that hamsters fed GM soy become sterile by the third generation -- and in some cases start growing hair inside their mouths. Hamsters are not human, but do we really want to discover that our grandchildren are sterile? The fact is, no one can tell what will happen to us as a result of eating this genetically engineered product.

Opponents of providing consumers this basic right to information will argue that it would only confuse consumers, be costly, or imply that the products are unsafe. Yet the FDA already requires the labeling of over 3,000 ingredients, additives, and processes. Providing basic information doesn't confuse the public; rather, it empowers them to make informed choices.

Rhode Island consumers must be allowed to exercise a conscious choice about the food we buy. We must be told if something is genetically modified or not. Those for whom GMO foods are not an issue can buy the product to their heart's content -- but those of us who want our families to have other choices need that label so we can make an informed decision!
