Tell Your State Legislators to Save Vaccine Exemptions!

The recent Disneyland measles outbreak has brought the vaccine debate front and center. Sens. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) are now urging reconsideration of vaccine exemptions. We expect legislation to be introduced very soon in California and Arizona to revoke the personal exemptions from mandatory vaccination. We are keeping a careful eye on other states as well.

Write to your state legislators and oppose the introduction of any bills that would eliminate personal exemptions from vaccines.

The recent Disneyland measles outbreak has brought the vaccine debate front and center. I understand at least one of our state representatives is interested in introducing legislation that would eliminate the "personal beliefs" exemption for parents who don't want their children to be vaccinated.

Scientific evidence shows that individuals vaccinated with live-virus vaccines such as MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), rotavirus, chicken pox/shingles, and influenza can shed the virus for many weeks or months afterwards and infect the vaccinated and unvaccinated alike. Those vaccinated can carry the disease in the back of their throat, and can infect others while not showing any symptoms themselves. Vaccines do not confer permanent immunity, and diseases such as measles have occurred in fully vaccinated populations.

Of great concern is the fact that from 2005 to 2014 there were no deaths from measles itself -- but a whopping 108 deaths from the MMR vaccine.

I know that the vaccination question is a hotly debated topic, even in the medical community. Many parents are concerned that some vaccines are unsafe because they may contain harmful ingredients like mercury or aluminum. Others believe the overloading of a young immune system with so many vaccines at once causes genetic changes. Some generally support vaccinations but wish there were more scientific clarity.

However, I think we all can agree that we need to keep information clear, unambiguous, and uncensored, and to allow people to make informed choices for themselves and their families. Current law protects both my family's health and our right to make our own healthcare choices, and I call upon you to oppose any legislation that would remove the personal exemption for vaccines.
