I understand that the Florida Senate will soon consider a number of bills (SB 416, SB 1700, SB 1708) which would require the labeling of genetically modified (GMO) foods. As your constituent, I urge you to support my right to know what's in the food I feed my family, and vote YES on these extremely important bills!

Some argue that a voluntary non-GMO certification is the answer. But the onus to label products should be on those that are introducing something new and untested into our food, not on those that have been growing fruits and vegetables organically for generations.

Opponents of GMO labeling argue that it would confuse consumers, be costly, or imply that the products are unsafe. Yet the FDA already requires the labeling of over 3,000 ingredients, additives, and processes. Providing basic information doesn't confuse the public; rather, it empowers them to make informed choices. Absent GMO labeling, consumers will continue to be deceived by current labeling practices.

Despite reassurances by Big Business, we still don't fully understand the long-term risks or potential outcomes of GMO foods. When it comes to my family's health and well-being, nothing is more important than protecting them from potential danger -- I'm simply not willing to gamble my family's health on GMOs.
