Tell Time Magazine: Shame on You!

Time magazine is the poster child for its defense of the pharmaceutical industry, especially Big Pharma’s vaccine program. Next to page after page of huge ads for drugs, the magazine runs frequent articles by editor Jeffrey Kluger attacking anyone who dares to ask questions about the safety and vaccines. He claims that vaccines are “extraordinarily effective and extraordinarily safe,” when nothing could be further from the truth.

Kluger even then endorses a study which suggests that the best way to respond to parental questions and concerns is not to reason or present evidence but to “parade pictures of sick children in front of parents” during a doctor visit when the vaccine can be administered. He dismisses any concerns about the science as “know-nothingism.”

Please tell Time they should be ashamed of running such stories repeatedly, week after week, only a few pages from their drug ads.

Your Drug Advertising and Pro-Vaccine Articles

Time has been one of the most respected news media outlets in the world, but you are now doing a grave disservice to your readers, and to consumers in general, with your incessant attacks on parents and others who have legitimate concerns about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines.

In your July 27 print edition, besides a full-page color ad for smokeless tobacco, you ran numerous ads for prescription drugs, including an inside-front-cover three-page spread for Xeljanz, a drug that "may increase your risk of certain cancers [such as] lymphoma, and well as reduce your white or red blood cell count, opening you up to serious infection."

In the same issue, editor Jeffrey Kluger attacked anyone who dares to ask questions about vaccines: "You can't poll a scientific fact....The same is true, too, for the safety and efficacy of vaccines: They're extraordinarily effective and extraordinarily safe, no matter what the folks in the anti-vaccine fringe have been saying."

This is, of course, demonstrably untrue. Vaccines are neither "extraordinarily effective" (as with the flu vaccine, which has been proven useless for 97.5% of adults) nor "extraordinarily safe" (as with Gardasil, which causes Guillain-Barré syndrome, paralysis of the lower limbs, vaccine-induced MS, and/or vaccine-induced encephalitis in unacceptably high numbers of patients).

Kluger then dismisses those asking questions about vaccines and the relationship of vaccine makers to government as exponents of "nonsense" and "know-nothingism" who have been appropriately "blow-torched" by a "global opprobrium."

This month Kluger filed yet another article on the same theme. This time he endorses a study which suggests that the best way to respond to parental questions and concerns is not to reason or present evidence but to "parade pictures of sick children in front of parents" during a doctor visit when the vaccine can be administered.

Is this really what Time Magazine has come to -- working to devise the most efficient methods for emotionally manipulating parents into vaccinating their kids, despite evidence that such vaccines may be neither safe nor effective? Why is questioning the statements of drug companies and their allies, and pointing to legitimate scientific studies and the government's own Vaccine Adverse Event Reports, somehow "nonsense" and "know-nothingism"?

Vaccines are not only made by the same drug companies advertising in Time; they also represent a huge segment of drug companies' sales, since patent-protected drug revenue is on the decline and blockbuster drug replacements are not on the horizon. It seems suspicious that your magazine devotes so much space to the proposition that vaccines are perfect and no one should ask questions about them. For Time to run page after page of drug ads, week after week, and put forth a continual drumbeat of pro-vaccine rhetoric that only supports those same advertisers, is reprehensible.
