Massachusetts Residents: Tell Your Representative to Vote NO on HB 1942

A bill currently being considered by the Massachusetts legislature (HB 1942) would put onerous restrictions on certain kinds of supplements that will have negative ramifications for thousands of consumers.

If passed, HB 1942 would prohibit the sale of dietary supplements for weight loss or muscle building to minors under the age of 18 by requiring retail establishments to place these products where they are only accessible by supervisory personnel and not directly accessible by customers.

The stated rationale for the bill is to protect young people because some have abused these supplements. However, the bill creates more problems than it solves.

The major problem with this bill is that we just don't know how many supplements will fall under its loosely defined categories. Additionally, since these products will likely be hidden from a customer’s view behind a counter, some people may never become aware of a product that would perfectly suit their health needs--or be too intimidated to ask for it.

Even more shockingly, the bill's sponsor wants signs posted explaining that these products can cause gastrointestinal impairment, tachycardia, hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke, severe liver injury sometimes requiring transplant or leading to death, organ failure, other serious injury and death. There's no evidence for any of this, no data. Just a clear government overreach.

Write to your elected officials in the Massachusetts legislature and urge them to OPPOSE HB 1942.
