Antibiotic-resistant illnesses currently kill an estimated 700,000 people a year globally. By 2050, these illnesses are expected to kill 10 million people. Based on recent research, it could be even worse—and coming even sooner.

Researchers around the world are sounding the alarm about the problem of antibiotic resistance during the COVID pandemic. Patients hospitalized for COVID-19 are at great risk of succumbing not only to the virus but to secondary bacterial infections. One researcher warns that “the current COVID-19 pandemic threatens to further weaken the already crumbling antibiotic infrastructure.”

Tens of thousands of reputable research studies support the use of natural medicines for bacterial infections. Researchers around the world are sounding the alarm about the problem of antibiotic resistance during the COVID pandemic. Patients hospitalized for COVID-19 are at great risk of succumbing not only to the virus but to secondary bacterial infections. More antibiotic use means more of the medicines currently being used become less effective or even useless. One researcher warns that "the current COVID-19 pandemic threatens to further weaken the already crumbling antibiotic infrastructure."

The FDA needs to reconsider its stance toward natural health alternatives for Americans to stay healthy. Tens of thousands of reputable research studies support the use of natural medicines for bacterial infections. It is very difficult, for example -- perhaps impossible -- for bacteria to become resistant to silver. These studies prove that the addition of natural medicines such as silver to antibiotics makes them far more potent, so that either a smaller dose can be used, or resistance can be overcome.

One study found that adding just a small amount of nano-sized silver to antibiotics made the treatment much more potent in killing a resistant type of bacteria. Nanosilver can also destroy the bacterium's biofilm -- a protective organic coating that helps protect the bacteria from antibiotics. One study showed that nanosilver destroyed the biofilm, making the bacteria susceptible to lower doses of antibiotics. Researchers found this strategy to be effective against some of the most dangerous bacteria.

Silver is safe enough to be commonly used to purify water in developing countries. If medical authorities think it is safe enough for people to drink routinely in their water and to use as a sanitizing agent, why does the FDA oppose its use in medicine? The agency doesn't even approve its use in hospitals! Must millions die simply because natural medicine won't make money for the pharmaceutical industry?

There are many other natural medicines that can help with bacterial infections: CBD, vitamin D, vitamin C, ozone therapy, essential oils, and others all have evidence that supports this use.

The FDA has done little or nothing about antibiotic resistance -- a major source of which is the misuse and overuse of antibiotic drugs on factory farms, where animals are routinely fed drugs to prevent the spread of disease amidst the squalid conditions that often prevail in CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations). The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Tom Frieden, said, "The end of the road isn't very far away for antibiotics....I've cared for patients for whom there are no drugs left. It is a feeling of such horror and helplessness."

I urge the FDA to allow natural remedies such as silver to combat antibiotic resistance!
