The South Dakota legislature is considering a bill, HB 1097, that adds philosophical belief exemptions to vaccines required for school, early childcare & college.

Parents have a right to make their own decisions about treatments for their children based on informed consent. Limiting a patient's ability to make informed decisions about what gets put into their body violates medical ethics.

I understand a bill has been introduced, HB 1097, that adds philosophical belief exemptions to vaccines required for school, early childcare & college.

I know that the vaccination question is a hotly debated topic, even in the medical community. Many parents are concerned that some vaccines are unsafe because they may contain harmful ingredients like mercury or aluminum. A study published in Current Medical Chemistry in 2011 stated that the "continued use of aluminum adjuvants in various vaccines for children as well as the general public may be of significant concern" because "aluminum presented in this form carries a risk for autoimmunity, long-term brain inflammation and associated neurological complications and may thus have profound and widespread adverse health consequences."

Others are concerned that overloading a young immune system with so many vaccines at once causes genetic changes. Some generally support vaccinations but wish there were more scientific clarity.

I think we all can agree that we need to keep information clear, unambiguous, and uncensored, and to allow people to make informed choices for themselves and their families--especially when so much information and evidence exists of the possible dangers posed by some vaccines.
