New York Residents: Expand the Practice of Nutrition!

The New York legislature is considering a bill, S5442/A7380, that would exclude some nutrition professionals from the practice of nutrition in the state. The bill prohibits non-licensed nutrition professionals from practicing to the level of their education and expertise.

For advocates of natural health, this means that consumers will have fewer choices when they are seeking the services of a nutrition or dietetics professional. This is unacceptable.

Too often, particular trade associations, such as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), try to exclude other professionals from practicing. In practice this often means that practitioners who don’t ascribe to a narrow set of conventional practices are unable to compete. ANH supports a consumer-driven market in which consumers can choose which credentials and what level of education they prefer.

Write to your senator and representative in the Assembly and urge them to oppose S5442/A7380!

I'm writing in opposition to S5442 and A7380. The law would keep qualified nutrition professionals from providing consumers with relevant advice that is within their range of expertise and education. It will restrict consumer choice.

S5442 and A7380 would create a license requirement for the practice of nutrition and dietetics, where previously there was none. Highly qualified wellness coaches, holistic practitioners, and even nutritionists with advanced degrees, would be excluded simply because they are not dietitians.
