Protect Vaccine Choice in Massachusetts

Many states have laws that allow patients to exempt themselves from vaccinations based on personal, philosophical, or religious beliefs. That way, parents who are wary of government-mandated vaccination schedules can make their own informed decisions about their family’s health.

But the Massachusetts legislature is considering a bill that would put the government in charge of medical exemptions (S.1517/H.2271). H.2411 eliminates the religious belief exemption to vaccination for school children. S.2499 mandates all community colleges require COVID-19 vaccine for students and employees on campus.

We must not lose our freedom to make informed choices about vaccines. Contact your state legislators and tell them to protect vaccine choice!

I understand a bill has been introduced that would  put the government in charge of medical exemptions (S.1517/H.2271). H.2411 eliminates the religious belief exemption to vaccination for school children. S.2499 mandates all community colleges require COVID-19 vaccine for students and employees on campus.

These bills raise a number of concerns for parents, children, and patients in general.

Parents have a right to make their own decisions about treatments for their children based on informed consent. Limiting a patient's ability to make informed decisions about what gets put into his or her body violates medical ethics.

Safety can be maintained without a vaccination requirement. Negative COVID tests, masking, and other measures have been taken for months to protect public health. Further, all COVID vaccines currently in use have reduced effectiveness against the Delta variant that is the dominant strain now. As of July 30th, there have been at least 125,000 fully-vaccinated Americans who have tested positive for COVID; the total number of breakthrough cases is surely higher, since many are asymptomatic. We might know more, but the CDC stopped tracking much of this data, relying on individual states to report breakthrough cases. This is to say that vaccination status is not a guarantee that an individual is not infected and capable of spreading the virus to others.

And what about those who have already had COVID and have acquired natural immunity? These individuals would have to submit to COVID vaccination, for which there is risk of serious adverse reactions with little benefit. Additionally, as explained by a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, vaccination confers a type of immunity that reduces your likelihood of serious illness or death from contracting COVID. It doesn't make you less likely to spread it. In people who have actually contracted COVID, the mucous membranes release antibodies to protect the nose and mouth, and this helps reduce viral spread. COVID vaccination is largely ineffective at stimulating this secretion of antibodies in the nose. Vaccinated individuals, then, can contract the virus and not get sick, but they can carry the virus in the nose which can spread easily to others.

I am also very troubled by some of the ingredients that are used in vaccines, such as aluminum. Aluminum is a dangerous neurotoxin, and federal regulators have not done testing to ensure that the amount of aluminum being injected into children is safe. At the same time, there is a growing amount of data to show that aluminum can accumulate in the brain, spleen, and lymph nodes. We don't know what the long term damage could be.

The government's vaccine adverse event reporting system (VAERS) lists a startling 57,287 adverse events from HPV vaccine, including 419 deaths--far more than any other vaccine. A World Health Organization study demonstrated that the vaccination has a tendency to produce clusters of serious adverse events. The American College of Pediatricians raised concerns that the vaccine could be linked to premature ovarian failure. And let's not forget the former Merck doctor who said that Gardasil "will become the greatest medical scandal of all time," that it "serves no other purpose than to generate profit for the manufacturer," and, like some other vaccines, that it can cause "Guillain-Barré syndrome, paralysis of the lower limbs, vaccine-induced MS, and vaccine-induced encephalitis."

I also oppose the Governor's executive order requiring the thousands of Executive Department employees to get vaccinated by Oct. 17 or face discipline that could involve "termination."  This and other similar mandates are coercive and ignore individual patient needs. This policy should be reversed and not repeated in other parts of the state.

I call upon you to oppose all of these bills and any bills that restrict patients' freedom of choice, like H.2411, S.1517/H.2271, and S.2499.
