Tell FDA to Fund Bioidentical Hormone Studies

As we recently reported, the FDA is gearing up to issue a ban on compounded bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. The newest development is a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), which falsely concluded that these critical medicines used by millions of women are a “public health concern.” We must use every avenue available to fight the FDA and prevent a ban on estriol, progesterone, and other compounded bioidentical hormones.

Write to the FDA and Congress, telling them to support studies on compounded hormones like estriol, and to reform a healthcare system that bars and undermines natural options like compounded bioidentical hormone therapy.

The FDA is endangering the health of millions of women across the United States by threatening to ban estriol and other compounded bioidentical hormones. Access to these critical medicines must be protected. OWH must prioritize funding and supporting studies of compounded bioidentical hormones to protect women's health. 
 
The FDA's announcement regarding bioidentical hormones came just hours after the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) released their report reviewing the "clinical utility" of compounded bioidentical hormone therapy (cBHT). Because the report views the widespread use of cBHT as a "public health concern," the FDA will likely move fast to ban these critical medicines. This cannot be allowed to happen.  
 
The NASEM committee concluded that there was insufficient high-quality evidence by which to judge the safety and efficacy of cBHRT. As this is being used as a basis to completely eliminate these medicines from the menu of choices, OWH should make it a priority to fill this gap so that the millions of women who currently choose cBHRT can continue to do so.

There is evidence to recommend cBHRT. A review of the clinical literature concluded that bioidentical hormones are associated with lower risks, including the risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease, and are more effective than synthetic or animal-derived hormones. What seems to be underway is an attempt to create drug company monopolies. The result may be that women may not be able to obtain estriol at all, even though estriol protects against cancer. 
 
Compounded hormones are used by millions of women to manage menopause or fertility changes. Pharmacies can make hormone medications that are tailored to a patient's individual needs, as determined by a doctor. Compounded bioidentical hormones have been used safely for decades; there is no reason for the FDA to eliminate consumer access to these medications--particularly estriol, for which there is no commercially available drug. 
 
The attack on estriol and other compounded bioidentical hormones is just part of a concerted campaign by federal agencies against natural medicine. For example: 
 
The FDA and FTC and some state's attorneys general have recently told doctors they can't advise both their patients and the public about natural prevention and treatment for COVID-19. If they continue to do so, they will face fines or even jail. Why? These treatments have solid research behind them. FDA drugs cannot cure COVID-19. But the FDA only seems concerned with protecting drug company monopolies.  All of this is an egregious violation of the patient/doctor relationship that will cost many lives.  
 
Another example: the FDA is trying to create insurmountable barriers to access homeopathic medicines.  
 
The FDA has even threatened cherry and walnut growers with fines and jail for mentioning respected university studies on the health benefits of those simple foods. The agencies say that any reference to these benefits turns cherries and walnuts into unapproved drugs!  This nonsense has to stop. Now is the time for the American public and its political leaders to step in and stop it. 
 
Lives are at stake. We are asking you, our political leaders, to step in reform a healthcare system that not only bars the use, but even the mention, of natural remedies that have not been, and never can be, put through the multi-billion dollar FDA approval process.   
 
Please protect access to estriol and other crucial compounded bioidentical hormones by funding and supporting studies on the clinical utility of using cBHRT.
