Tens of thousands of Americans—and potentially many, many more—are being injured by COVID vaccines. But the federal program to compensate these victims, the Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program (CICP), sets an extremely high bar for compensating claims, and is even more restrictive than the notoriously grueling process in the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP).

COVID vaccine injury compensation program needs reform

Tens of thousands of Americans--and potentially many, many more--are being injured by COVID vaccines. But the federal program to compensate these victims, the Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program (CICP), sets an extremely high bar for compensating claims, and is even more restrictive than the notoriously grueling process in the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP). This must be addressed immediately.

According to the CDC, 34.7 million Americans have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 11.2 million have received both doses. To date, 12,639 adverse events have been reported to the CDC; we also know that Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare estimated that fewer than 1 percent of vaccine injuries actually get reported, meaning there could be more than 1 million injuries. Among the CDC's numbers are 934 reports of deaths after COVID vaccination, two reports of brain death, 67 reports of cardiac arrest, 145 reports of facial paralysis, 136 reports of anaphylactic reactions, 107 reports of influenza like illness, and many, many more.

CICP only rewards claims for "serious injuries," defined as injuries that warranted hospitalization or that led to a significant loss of function or disability. Claims must also be filed within one year of vaccination, with no exceptions. CICP does not award money for pain and suffering, and the program only awards a portion of lost wages from a COVID vaccine injury. Reimbursement for attorneys' fees is also unavailable. In short, the process is lengthy, difficult, and expensive.

This hurts disadvantaged communities the most; racial and ethnic minorities are twice as likely to die from COVID-19 as white people. The government is making it difficult, if not impossible, for lower income communities and communities of color to be compensated for a COVID-19 vaccine injury. This is completely unacceptable.

Please support reforms that make it easier to get compensated for vaccine injuries related to the COVID vaccine.
