Support Congressional Resolution on Vitamin D for COVID & Defend Natural Medicine

Congressman Glenn Grotham (R-WI) has introduced a House Resolution to recognize the significant role vitamin D may play in the fight against COVID-19. The need for this resolution underscores the federal government’s policy of censoring truthful information about the benefits of natural products that can help Americans prevent and treat disease.

This follows an ongoing attempt to ban bioidentical estriol and other hormones critical for women and to destroy homeopathic treatments. All of this is an egregious violation of the patient/doctor relationship. It also violates the right of the public to learn about nutritionally based therapies that are not only supported by solid scientific research, but are also potentially lifesaving. We have to fight back to preserve the doctor/patient relationship and our right to natural treatments.

Send a message to Congress, telling them to cosponsor this resolution and reform a healthcare system that not only bars the use, but even the mention, of non-patentable natural remedies that have not been, and never can be, put through the multi-billion dollar FDA approval process.

Congressman Glenn Grotham has introduced H.Res.116 to recognize the significant role vitamin D may play in the fight against COVID-19. If passed, this resolution will encourage official recognition of vitamin D as effective in preventing serious COVID-19 infection. I urge you to cosponsor and support this resolution.

The need for this resolution underscores the federal government's policy of blocking the free flow of information about the benefits of food and dietary supplements to help Americans prevent and treat disease, as well as efforts to ban other natural options that compete with FDA-approved drugs. For example, FDA policies are on track to ban bioidentical estriol and other hormones critical for women and to eliminate homeopathic treatments. Americans have the right to know about and to use these natural health options.

The ban on sharing information about food and dietary supplements has dramatic consequences for our ability to treat and prevent COVID. Zinc [1], vitamin D [2], and quercetin [3] have a demonstrated impact on the virus, but doctors sharing published studies on the benefits of these nutrients for COVID are being threatened with warning letters from the federal government for sharing studies on these nutrients because they aren't FDA-approved to treat COVID.

Keep in mind that these nutrients can never become FDA approved. FDA approval can cost billions of dollars. Drug companies can afford this steep price because their drugs are strongly patent protected. Supplements, being natural, cannot be strongly patented, thus companies selling them cannot recoup the cost of gaining FDA approval.
 
The stifling of information about natural products hurts disadvantaged communities the most. Communities of color have been hit especially hard by the COVID pandemic, and they are also twice as likely to suffer from chronic disease [4]. If information about the demonstrated benefits of natural products can be freely shared, the health of these communities could improve dramatically.

I urge Congress to fix these problems by cosponsoring H.Res.116 and passing legislation to:

*permit food and supplements to share peer reviewed studies with information that could benefit Americans' health;

*protect access to homeopathic medicine;

*protect access to estriol and other compounded bioidentical hormones; and

*protect access to widely available beneficial food and supplements.

Lives are at stake. We are asking you, our political leaders, to step in to reform a healthcare system that not only bars the use, but even the mention, of natural remedies that have not been, and never can be, put through the multi-billion dollar FDA approval process.
