Ask the FDA to Warn Patients of SSRI Violence!

There is a common thread between the Columbine High School shooters, spree shootings at a community center in Los Angeles, two brokerage firms in Atlanta, and a printing plant in Kentucky: SSRI antidepressants. Every one of those shootings was perpetrated by people taking Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox, Paxil, or a related antidepressant drug.

FDA-approved SSRI drugs currently contain a black box notice warning that the drug may cause young people to want to kill themselves, especially in the first few months of treatment. We believe that the black box warnings need to be expanded to include the risk of psychotic breaks and violence against other people. There is also a great risk of antidepressant-induced suicide, violence, and mania among our military personnel.

Please ask Dr. Margaret Hamburg, the FDA Commissioner, to expand the current black box warnings to include violence against others.

Expansion of black box warnings on SSRI medications

I have been terribly disturbed by the increasing numbers of reports of individuals taking FDA-approved SSRI antidepressant drugs who become violent toward others. A recent Time magazine article discussed the "Top Ten Legal Drugs Linked to Violence," and five of those ten are SSRIs.

There are now numerous studies published in peer-reviewed journals that make a clear connection between prescription SSRI use and psychotic breaks resulting in terrible violence against other people. I'm grateful that the black box warning on SSRI drugs currently discuss the danger of suicide and suicidal ideation, especially among adolescents, but no mention is made of violence against others.
 
Since 1995, there have been over 20 different school shootings worldwide (though most were here in the US) in which the shooters were either taking SSRI antidepressants, or were withdrawing from them, and numerous other school shooting threats, plots, and violent outbursts from SSRI patients. Nearly two dozen more shootings, not school-related, were also linked to prescription antidepressant use.

Dr. Hamburg, please use your influence to expand the black box labels on SSRI medications to include a warning about violence against others, in addition to the warning about the risk of suicide. It is vital that parents, doctors, and their patients have all the necessary information available when making the important decision to prescribe or take SSRIs.
